See this issue all the time unfortunately

First thing to blame is the vehicle. Some vehicles have bad grounding like Eric mentioned. Clean all ground points esp battery to chasis, battery to engine and EFI ground wires to top of plenum (in most vehicles)

FYI Transplanted engines seem to have the highest problem rate with communications because of bad or missing earths

Secondly any aftermarket coil system etc is likely to cause bigger recoil on release of charge and feed back into your ECU and then down the consult lines

Thirdly is the consult cable used. I work with Pete from PLMS and we do many dyno runs and test the cables accordingly. Constant revisions in the cables were made to deal with noise issues - which were especially evident in USB versions

I have used various other cables (as have customers who have then swapped their cable over for a better one) and can confirm that those cables do not like noise.

Nistune sends out the data bytes and then checks the response back on receipt. We experience in noisy conditions corrupted data bytes back which is bad (especially for map changes) so then need to repeat. Some cars are so bad that after continuous retries we have to disconnect

In your case doing a consult download, you are looking for a header character, length and then data. If either of the first two are corrupted then all bets are off and your download will terminate without recovery code. Language etc doesnt matter in most cases. Look at the data you are getting back and check it against what you should get back

Some software like earlier NissanDataScan etc didnt check this data. You will see needles flicker etc (esp on higher RPMs) when bad data is not determined and passed through to the user display

we use the earlier EPROM Z32 ECUs. Details in thread below. Doesnt matter auto/manual, NA/turbo if you put the correct ROM image into the ERPOM chip/board

Therea a number of resistors which need changing. I got one of those boards here and its a bit different to other ECU types

With nissans for editing you have the choice of ROM Editor for static editing, TunerPro with Moates or Liveedit with Pocket Romulator on for live tuning. (Romulator does not do correct write behind on these ECUs so will 'skip' during changes)

<snip rant>
and a standard datalogging cable (basic serial to usb cable) 5v TTL load on teh market cheap as chip tto buy and use.
Not available for CA18. there is no diagnostic port on these vehicles hence why the source was disassembled and stream the parameters out via a USB interface. Later model nissans have consult and a variety of consult software (free/paid) available to decode it

I dont know what you have against my software but theres your alternatives Wink

get the BIN file from the Type 1 folder in Nistune ROM pack at www.nistune.com

Nistune ROM image pack has S14A JDM images, get one of those and you need a daughterboard of sorts to use it

Yep I designed the boards, wrote the firmware and the application software Very Happy Started with making a USB interface to my R31 ECU using some basic logic and then kept on adding more functionality to it and then expanding to other ECUs. I managed to get knock count firmware working on CA18 last night also so very happy with that!

I trace the RAM on CA18DET ECUs ... it has internal RAM addresses something like 0x00-0x1FF (check HD6303XP datasheet) and external RAM mapped in at 0x1000-0x1400

Best to shoot an email about nistune stuff. but yeah software is $200AUD and board is $200AUD. you can buy them seperately but i havent published the protocol as such, which is basically read, write and identification commands

We use A14, A15, R/W and E (clk)

Using those top two address lines gives you access to the entire memory area including RAM. So I added a RAM trace monitor in there to look through memory addresses and 'test' consult parameters as I put the consult table together for each ECU

We use the E to clock in/out the data as required, which removes the need for reading /CE and /OE lines which differ between various ECUs anyway. Thats probably some of the problem with the romulator is monitoring both of those lines, it may only monitor one during RAM trace

most of us gave up on the romulator... the moates 2.0 does hardware maptracing very well

and for CA18 I ended up making up a USB interface to this and reading TP, RPM etc directly from RAM and made the Nistune Type 1 board based from earlier prototypes (this is a very old thread!)

ROM is the same except they have a protection mechanism in the one I was looking at. Nothing port specific or anything. I dont think you need to worry about that

I have a photo here:

on that third party board the MCU is hard set as external ROM. the other lines are multiplexed between the EPROM and other chip in the ECU

there are control lines for what the lines do at particular times. so when they are being used for data/address then you latch the address and read/write the data

when the lines are used as I/O ports then you pass the signal through. its not terribly difficult but time consuming to get it right. those third party boards use 2 x CPLD to process those signals with the right logic accordingly

i've always wanted to do it but no time yet... also fabricating something to fit the ECU and board is the other interesting part of it

Depends what you want to do. If you are happy with using the zemulator for tuning, the romulator software that eric has posted a link to will get the ROM images out for you

Nistune will also allow you to use the romulator box with other vehicles and use a consult cable for maptracing. Just shoot us a mail at www.nistune.com if you wanted to organise something
